To commemorate the 70th birthday of Meralco Chairman Manuel M. Lopez, a former Phl Chess Federation Director, we are holding this 3-event tournament with the support of friends of Meralco Chess Club. Most of the participants are students from public schools.
Justin Corpin of Alejandro Roces S & T HS won the blitz event. Ian Forcado of Sta Rosa S & T HS was 2nd and Jayson Tapia of Antipolo Nat'l HS and Rhal Sol Cruz of La Salle Greenhills were tied for 3rd place.
Ian Forcado of Sta Rosa STHS won the rapid event with 4.5 points in 5 games. Rhal Sol Cruz of La Salle Greenhills scored 3.5 for 2nd place and Prince Sanguan of Mataas na Paaralang Neptali Gonzales edged Paul Aquino and JD Moje for 3rd place with a higher tie breaks on top of 3 pts.
Day 3 and Day 4 3rd Event: Semi-Standard G/60 minutes
Ian Forcado of Sta Rosa Science and Technology High School asserted his supremacy by topping the main event of the Manuel M. Lopez Cup with 4 points in 5 games. Peton Saltorio of Eulogio Rodriguez Vocational High School and Prince Sanguan of Mataas na Paaralang Neptali Gonzales tied or 2nd-3rd place with 3 points each.
The trio earned slots to the 3rd Meralco Chess Camp to be held at MMLDC in Antipolo City this weekend.
The Lopez Cup is made possible by the generosity of a dozen Meralco employees for the benefit of these students from various public schools.
