As a birthday gift to outgoing Meralco Chairman Manuel Lopez, our club organized the 1st Manuel M. Lopez Chess Festival. With generous support from our friends, we were able to hold 3 events for the youth who are mostly from public schools; blitz, rapid and standard, over a 4-day period on the last week of May, the birth month of MML.
Ian Forcado of Sta Rosa Science and Technology High School dominated the festival by winning the rapid and the standard events.
Justin Corpin,an incoming freshman at UP under a chess scholarship, prevented a grandslam by winning the blitz event with a perfect score of 5 wins in 5 games.
