VIETNAM: SILVER for PAU

MEJIA SECURES SILVER; BERSAMINA SETTLED FOR SILVER IN THE BLITZ COMPETITION: VIETNAM ASEAN AGE GROUP CHESS

CHERRY Ann Mejia of Taguig City and Paulo Bersamina of Pasay City carry the fight for the 25 Filipino youth chessers in the 2009 Asean + Age Group Chess Championships in Hue, Vietnam by adding another country's medal yesterday.

Mejia, who won the country's 1st gold on Friday in the Girl's Open 14 and under division of the standard play settled for a silver medal finish in the Blitz competition after garnering 8.0 points, which won by eventual gold medallist Vietnamese Nguyen Thi Thuy Trien who tote 9.0 points after eleven games of play.

Bersamina, on the other hand settled for a silver medal. Vietnamese FM Tran Tuan Minh won the gold medal with an impressive score of 10.0 points.

Last Saturday, Bersamina, a La Salle Greenhills student trounced local bet Le Huu Thai in the seventh and final round to bag the gold medal in the rapid competition, Boy's 12 and under class. Actually, Bersamina tallied 5.5 points, the same output of former solo-leader and silver medallist Vietnamese Le Huu Thai and compatriot bronze medallist Austin Jacob Literatus. Paulo, is a son of Meralco's Norlito Bersamina of Pasay Extension Office and Rosalie S. Bersamina settled over-all 6th place in the standard play last Friday with 5.5 points.
