Young chessers make RP proud in Asean Olympiad
MANILA, Philippines – The 4 young Filipino chess players who participated in the just concluded 4th ASEAN Primary School Sport Olympiad (APSSO) shone bright as the event came to a close in Jakarta, Indonesia on Wednesday.
Filipino chess players Marie Antoinette San Diego, Daryl Unix Samantila, Rhal Sol Cruz, Jr. and Stephen Rome Pangilinan, dubbed as the "Mighty Four," the future chess stars of the Philippines, collected 5 medals in the competition.
Cavite’s San Diego won a gold medal in the girls' individual standard, a silver medal in girls' individual rapid, and another silver medal in girls' individual blitz (exhibition event).
Samantila, who hails from Malabon, brought home a silver medal in the boys' individual blitz (exhibition event).
The combined 10-point output of Samantila, Cruz and Pangilinan in the boys' team blitz competition was enough to secure a team bronze medal.
The Philippines also participated in athletics, badminton, football and table tennis events. – By Marlon Bernardino
