RP Team vies in ASEAN School Olympiad

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines is set to compete in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Primary School Sports Olympiad 2010 (APSSO) Chess Championships in Indonesia.
The Philippine team will see action from November 4 to 10 in Jakarta. Members of the team are set to leave for Jakarta on Wednesday.
The team is led by Palarong Pambansa Mandaluyong meet Vice Champion Raul “Rhal” Sol Cruz of La Salle Green Hills (LSGH), Daryl Unix Samantila of Adamson University, Marie Antoinette San Diego of Cavite and Stephen Rome Pangilinan of Bulacan.
The Filipinos will go against squads from Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos and Brunei.
“We expect these young and talented players to perform well as usual and bring honors to the country,” RP head coach International Arbiter and National Master Erwin L. Carag said.
“Most of these players did very well during the ASEAN age-group chess championships held in Subic, so it will not be a surprise that they will perform just as well in the ASEAN level,” he added..
The Head of Delegation is Feliciano “Len” Toledo of the Department of Education (DepEd).
The APSSO is an annual sports competition event at elementary level created to improve and develop sports at an early age. It aims to promote an intelligent and strong young generation that fosters friendship, sportsmanship and respect with fellow athletes.
It is organized by the Ministry of National Education and the Directorate of Kindergarten and Elementary School Education of Indonesia.
Other sports events included in the competition are football, table tennis, badminton and athletics. – by Marlon Bernardino
