Chess: Meralco stages Caritas Youth tourney

By U.S. News Agency / Asian

The Meralco Sports and Youth Advocacy Office headed by Meralco Bolts head Ryan Gregorio called a time-out from the courtside to give support to Caritas Manila by staging the “Chess for Caritas” last Saturday at the Meralco Center in Pasig City.

The chess event aims to raise awareness to the Segunda Mana Program among Meralco employees who made their donations in-kind at the Caritas boxes stationed at their canteens.

A pair of the country’s National Masters, Gerry Cabellon and Marlon Bernardino, conducted back-to-back simultaneous matches against MVP Olympics-bound Meralco Chess Team, Meralco Chess enthusiasts, and Meralco’s All Star Kiddies of Ahedres Lovers or the ASKALs.

The 20-board simul match resulted to a combined 12 Wins – 7 Draws – 1 Loss for the masters. First MVP Olympics bronze medalist Ray Domingo of Mandaluyong Business Center was the lone winner as he outwitted NM Bernardino in his favorite King’s Indian Defense and was awarded a specially designed gold medal bearing the Caritas logo.

The “Magnificent Seven” who obtained a draw with Cabellon and Bernardino are Meralco Team’s Adrian Esteva, Abet Casiano and Ronnie Dellota, ASEAN Olympiad bronze medalist Rhal Sol Cruz of La Salle, Batang Quezon City champion John Margarito of Bagong Silangan High School, Sta. Rosa Champions Shania Mendoza of International Montessori School and Jasper Forcado of Sta. Rosa Science High School.

“Thanks to Meralco for supporting the Segunda Mana Program. These donations will help support the more than 500 scholars of Caritas Manila and we hope for more chess events like these!” said Choy Gagalac, Social Marketing Officer of Caritas Manila.
