Meralco Employees' Day: NM Cabellon Simul

On the occassion of MERALCO's 102nd Foundation Day, the MERALCO Chess Club woke up from a very long slumber and opened with a simul match by National Master Gerardo CABELLON of Manila Sector.

Joseph Ganapin, a former member of the MERALCO Chess Team, was the lone winner. But 2 other veterans forced NM Cabellon to a draw; Mang Abe BELEN and Ka Romy AGUILAR of Call Center.

The event was organized by Ruben Lagrimas, Darryl Mata, and Rolly Sol Cruz with the backing of MERALCO Day Chairman Ruben Benosa.

Leko wins Wijk aan Zee

The most exciting tournament in recent memory ended with a victory for Peter Leko, who added a last "Grand Slam" title to his list. The classical chess vice champion drew his final game, as did his only rival Vishy Anand. Leko finished half a point ahead of the field. Ukraine prodigy Sergey Karjakin won the B Group. Man vs Machine

It was billed as "one of the more spectacular chess events in 2005, a first ever Man vs Machine chess shoot-out". Two GMs and two FMs against the strongest programs available: Fritz, Shredder, Junior and Chessmaster. The result was a disastrous 14.5-1.5 defeat for the humans.

The event was inaugurated by the Minister of Sports Adhyaksa Dault and featured GM Utut Adianto, GM Susanto Megaranto, FM Tirta Chandra, FM Taufik Halay – a team commonly known as the 'Indonesia Bangkit'. The humans faced the world's top chess programs, Fritz 8, Junior 8, Shredder 8 and Chessmaster 9000.
