Top seed GM Mikhail Mchedlishvili of Georgia edged fellow GM Ehsan Ghaemmaghami of Iran in the tiebreak to capture the title even as GM Rogelio Antonio, Jr. finished a fighting third in the fifth Prospero Pichay Cup international chess championship at the LWUA Bldg. in Quezon City.

Mchedlishvili, the highest-rated player in the field with an ELO of 2613, outwitted GM Abhijeet Gupta of India in the final round to clinch the title with seven points on five wins and four draws.

Ghaemmaghami subdued GM Li Shilong of China to finish in a two-way tie for first place with Mchedlishvili with seven points.

But the sixth-seed player from Iran settled for runner-up honors due to a lower tiebreak score.

Mchedlishvili and Ghaemmaghami, however, went home US$4,500 richer each.

It was the second title in less than three weeks for Mchedlishvili, who also topped the Ravana GM tournament in a two-way tie with GM Vladimir Georgiev of Macedonia in Sri Lanka last month.

The smile was back on the faces of the Filipino chess fans, too.

Antonio outduelled GM Merab Gagunashvili of Georgia to clinch third place and emerge as the highest-placed Filipino player for the second straight time since a sixth-place finish in last week’s fourth President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo Cup.

The multi-titled campaigner from Calapan, Oriental MIndoro, who earned a slot in the coming World Chess Cup in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia next month, finished in a tie for third to fifth places with GMs Nguen Ngoc Truong Son of Vietnam and Zhang Zhong of Singapore with 6.5 points.

Nguyen whipped GM Anuar Ismagambetov of Kazakhstan while Zhang trounced GM Eugene Torre of the Philippines to catch up with Antonio.

Antonio, however, finished ahead of Nguyen and Zhang in the tiebreak.

Asian Zone 3.3 champion GM Darwin Laylo of the Philippines battled GM Tigran Kotanjian of Armenia to a draw to finish in a tie for sixth to eighth places with GM Dao Thien Hai of Vietnam and GM Neelotpal Das of India with six points.

Dao outclassed giant-killer Lyndon Lumancas and Das outplayed IM Richard Bitoon in the other crucial encounter.

Overall, Laylo wound up sixth with a higher tiebreak score.

PGMA Cup champion GM Anton Filippov of Uzbekistan drew with GM-elect Ronald Dableo of the Philippines to lead a big group of players in ninth to 21st places with 5.5 points.

The bunch included Torre, Dableo, GM Mark Paragua, IM Rolando Nolte, IM Oliver Dimakiling and FM Ferdie Donguines.

Paragua drew with GM Pyotr Kostenko of Kazakhstan, Nolte toppled GM John Paul Gomez, Dimakiling humbled David Elorta and Donguines bested FM Haridas Pascua

MANILA, Aug. 2 –World Chess Cup-bound Grandmaster (GM) Rogelio “Joey” Antonio Jr., flashed his old deadly form after a magnificent performance in a rare simultaneous chess exhibition on Saturday at the Basement Canteen, Lopez Bldg, in Meralco, Ortigas Center, Pasig City.

The twelve (12) time National Open Champion Antonio, who hails from Calapan Oriental, Mindoro finish undefeated in the 24-board event on account of eighteen (18) wins and four (4) draws, a fund-raising drive for RP Paralympics Chess Team, organized by Meralco Chess Club headed by president Rolly Sol Cruz.

The Quezon City based Antonio, top player of multi-titlist Philippine Army Chess Team is scheduled on Monday, to pay a courtesy call to Vice President Noli “Kabayan” De Castro. De Castro, a former journalist is a native of Pola, Oriental Mindoro.

La Salle Greenhills pupil Earl Cabugao and Rhal Sol Cruz each secured a golden draw together with Darryl Mata and Ronnie Dellota of Meralco, Spawn2 and Pulsar of Brgy Wesley Chess Club.

Cabugao, a freshman at LSGH, able defended with the Sicilian to earn the draw in 22 moves while Sol Cruz, a Grade 6 student, crossed the Italian Opening to secure the draw in 27 moves.

MANILA, Philippines - GM Rogelio Antonio Jr. is headed to next year’s World Chess Cup.

The 47-year-old Antonio fought Chinese GM Zhou Weiqi of China to a quick draw in the 11th round of the 2009 Asian Continental individual chess championship in Subic to finish in a share of third place.

The truce was reached after only 12 moves of the Ruy Lopez but it was all Antonio needed to secure his rightful place in the World Chess Cup scheduled in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia on Nov. 20-Dec. 15.

The pride of Calapan, Oriental Mindoro finished with an 11-round total of 7.5 points on five wins, five draws and only one loss in this prestigious competition organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP).

“This is another memorable tournament for me. Except for my 10th-round setback, I think I played well overall," said Antonio, who duplicated the feat of GM Darwin Laylo as the only Filipino player to earn a berth to the World Chess Cup in 2007.

"Sana maging maganda din ang performance ko sa World Cup," added Antonio, who barely missed a berth in the 2007 World Cup after landing in a tie for eighth to 14th places in the previous edition held in Mandaue City.

Antonio’s success, however, turned out to be the only reason for celebration for the host Filipinos.

So, Torre falter

The country’s top two players – GM Wesley So and GM Eugene Torre – both went out with a big thud.

So, at 15 the country’s brightest hope for international recognition, suffered a heartbreaking setback to GM Le Quang Liem of Vietnam in 34 moves of another Sicilian.

And Torre, the country’s most-experienced player for more than four decades now, yielded to top seed GM Krishan Sasikiran of India in 44 moves of the Nimzo-Indian.

The twin setbacks left So (four wins, five draws and two losses) and Torre (five wins, three draws and three losses) with only 6.5 points, good for joint 15th.

GM Surya Shakhar Ganguly of India and GM Zhou Weiqi topped the 11-round tournament with identical scores of eight points.

Ganguly, one of 12 Indian players who saw action here, drew with GM Zhou Jianchao of China in only 16 moves of the Gruenfeld.

Ninth seed GM Hou Yifan of China and GM Parimarjan Negi of India also agreed to a draw in 27 moves of the Sicilian while GM Chanda Sandipan of India and Yu Shaoteng of China also split the point in 14 moves of the Catalan to book their places in the Top 10 and a spot in the World Chess Cup.

Also making it to the prestigious competition is Le, whose dramatic, final-round triumph over the second-seeded So provided the biggest story for the day.
