Bernardino sweeps Meralco chess

MANILA, Philippines – RP and US chess master Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr. swept all of his matches in a rare simultaneous chess exhibition held recently at the Basement Canteen, Lopez Bldg, in Meralco, Ortigas Center, Pasig City.

Bernardino, a sports writer and member of the La Salle Greenhills (LSGH) coaching staff, swept his all ten board matches in the event organized by Meralco chess club.

The club is headed by president Rolly Sol Cruz supported by Mon Pataleon, James Macagbam Willy Baetiong, Bong Cachola. The tournament was held to commemorate the 2nd death anniversary of Noel P. Olvida.

Meanwhile, Maga tallied 14 wins and a draw to Jerome Saltorio of Earist.

Saltorio, the only one to score a draw against Maga won a slot in the 3rd Meralco Chess Workshop by GM Buenaventura "Bong" Villamayor.

Meralco Chess Club has already organized simultaneous chess in the past. Among the early participants were Grandmasters Wesley So, Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr., Eugene Torre, Jayson Gonzales, Mark Paragua, Villamayor, national masters Andrew Vasquez, Gerry Cabellon and US master John Daniel Bryant.
