For the record, the W's were recorded by Alexis of PARA and Angel of Death of BW while the D's by Jay and Pau of MERALCO.

Each one paid an entry fee of P500, except for the 5 PARA who are the beneficiaries. Thus, a total of P8k was raised, with P2k given to GM for gas allowance which he was actually declining and the P6k shared to the PARA players which they received individually from no other than GM Torre.

As said by GM Torre in his inspirational talk, small deeds such as these not only endears all of us to God but also shows to each of our community that chess players are responsible and caring persons.

And I'd like to add that each one who played and supported this project in one way or another, you all have another invite coming to you and it is coded as MT25.34-36 which reads:

"Come and possess the kingdom which has been prepared for you ever since the creation of the world. I was hungry and you fed me, thirsty and you gave me a drink, I was a stranger and you received me in your homes, naked and you clothed me; I was sick and you took care of me, in prison and you visited me."

Dear GMs, these PARA players and their families are all of the above; hungry and thirsty not just for the real food but from the fellowship of abled persons like each of us. They are in the prison of their disabilities and are imprisoned to mix it up with their fellow disabled but you visited them and played chess with them.

And their unsaid gratefulness was summed up in one simple single act; Melchor giving to all of us, through me, that small plastic supot containing the 3 gold medals he won in the Asian Paralympic Games.

Ateneo, La Salle resume rivalry in kiddie chess

MANILA, Sept. 4 –Ateneo De Manila University and De La Salle University resume their friendly and fierce rivalry in chess when the 1st Meralco Management Leadership Development Center (MMLDC) for kiddies 14- and- under chess championships gets underway on Sunday at 8 a.m. at the MMLDC Km 27 Sumulong Hi-way, Antipolo City (infront of Assumption School, Antipolo campus).

"The chess war between the two schools promise to be exciting and classic as always, as the Blue Eagles of Ateneo send their top players as well the Green Archers of La Salle," said International Master (IM) Marlon Bernardino in his pool report.

Tournament organizer Rolly Sol Cruz, president of the Meralco Chess Club, assures the fans the event is worth watching.

“Ateneo and La Salle are two schools who are known for their intense rivalry. With this tournament, we aim to continue that grand tradition."

“You’ve seen our schools go at it so you know that you could only expect something great and always something really exciting from us," he added.

The Blue Eagles are bannered by Jett and JV Cadawas-Marcos while the Green Archers are composed of Rhal Sol Cruz, Ralp Villaflor and Earl Cabugao.

Not to be outdone are Nico and Quinna Soler, Felipe Magdalaga, Jorie Bonifacio, Jolina Saltorio and Daniel Sanchez of National University, Darryl Samantila and Jean Karen Enriquez of Adamson University, Joshua and Vince Morte of Marist School Marikina; Philip Buhat, Barciso Gravillo, Jiselle Javate, John Bryan Domondon, Alexis dela Cruz, Jan Kenneth Ende, Jonalyn Abajon, Kelly Jay Ompad, Harold Ian Nalla, and Nerissa Ferrer of Ramon Magsaysay Cubao High School, Joshua Nicart, Jayson Tagal, Rickson Pajantoy, Kenneth delos Reyes, Haydielyn Valerio and Kevin Ulanday of San Isidro National High School, Jonathan Serenio, Ma. 1ST MMLDC CHESS CUP

MERALCO Chess Club will hold the 1st MERALCO Management Leadership Development Center (MMLDC) Chess Cup for kiddies (14 years old and under) on SEPTEMBER 6, 2009 (9:00 am) at MMLDC Km 27 (in front of Assumption School) Sumulong Hi-way, Antipolo City. The event is sponsored by MMLDC Foundation, Inc (mmldc.org), through Ms. Agnes Fidelino, Managing Director, as part of their 10th year anniversary celebration and sharing with the community and thus, registration is free. MMLDC Foundation specializes in providing training solutions within a total learning ambiance. It will be an individual Swiss System on a 15 minute per player to finish the game with NM Marlon Bernardino as Chief Arbiter and FM Chris Castellano as Deputy Arbiter.

Nakamura wins US Championship

The 2009 US Chess Championship took place in Saint Louis, United States, May 7th-17th 2009. 24 players competed. Hikaru Nakamura won the US Championship beating Josh Friedel in the final round. Robert Hess couldn't overcome a drawish bishops of opposite colour ending against Akobian and had to settle for a draw. Alexander Onischuk tied with Hess on 6.5/9. Gata Kamsky was a further half point back.

Canadian Open 2009

The Canadian Open took place in Edmonton, Alberta Canada July 11th-19th 2009. In the final round Mark Bluvshtein beat Theo Hommeles with black whilst pre-event favourites Shirov and Adams were held. Then in a notable win Edward Porper beat Surya Ganguly. This meant Bluvstein and Porper finished ahead of the field with an impressive score of 7.5/9. Mark Bluvshtein took the title on tie-break.

FRENCH CHAMPIONSHIP

Nîmes 2009 : Vlad Tkachiev & Sophie Milliet, champion & championne de France 2009 ! 22 août 2009

Le verdict est tombé ! En neutralisant Hicham Hamdouchi lors de l'ultime ronde du National, Vlad Tkachiev a définitivement assuré sa victoire et remporte, 3 ans après Besançon (2006), son 2e titre de champion de France. Surclassant ses concurrentes depuis le début du tournoi, Sophie Milliet, avec un point et demi d'avance, était déjà assurée de se succéder à elle-même depuis hier. Sophie remporte son 3e titre de championne de France (2003, 2008 et 2009).

Le public retrouvera les deux champions lors de la cérémonie de clôture qui se déroulera au Parnasse samedi 22 août à 17h30.

ATENEO TOPS PAYA MIDGET CHESS TOURNEY

ATENEO de Manila University elementary chess team headed by coach NM Roland Joseph Perez scored 18.0 points captured the crown in the 2009 Philippine Athletics Youth Association (PAYA) midget chess team championships yesterday at the La Salle Greenhills (LSGH) campus in San Juan City.

LSGH (16.5 points) and Colegio San Agustin (12.5 points) came in second and third respectively. Other participating school were Southridge, Claret and Xavier.

Adjudged individual medallist were Board 1 Giovani Mejia of LSGH (4/4 for Gold Medal), Paul Vincent Wong of CSA (3/3 for Silver Medal) and Jacob de Leon of Southridge (1/5 for Bronze Medal; Board 2 Peter Padre of CSA (3.5/5 for Gold Medal), Luke de Leon of LSGH (2.5/4 for Silver Medal) and Juancho Morales of Southridge (1/5 for Bronze Medal); Board 3 Nathaniel Manahan of Ateneo (5/5 for Gold Medal); Angelo Isaiah Nuestro of LSGH (4/5 for Silver Medal) and KimMig Soo of CSA (3/5 for Bronze Medal); Board 4 Greg Andaman of CSA (3/5 for Gold Medal) and Dante Victorino Jr. of Southridge (1/5 for Silver Medal); Board 5 Jose Marti Caniones of Ateneo (4/4 of Gold Medal), Timothy James dela Cruz of LSGH (3/3 for Silver Medal) and Board 6 Rusty John Macalalad of LSGH (3/3 for Gold Medal) and Stephen Myles Young of Ateneo (3/3 for Gold Medal. Madriaga reigns in MCC chess

MANILA, Philippines - Second seed Jose Madriaga halved the point with No. 11 Steven Dacanay after 46 moves of a King’s Indian Defense in the fifth and final round and ruled the MCC 1850 below standard chess tourney held over the weekend at St. Francis Square in Mandaluyong City.

Madriaga, who works as an engineer at Emerson Electic Corp. for Asia, posted a total output of 4.5 points with four wins and one draw and claimed his second MCC title. He went home richer by P3,000.

Chess team hikes Filipinos Para Games gold haul

KUALA LUMPUR – The Filipino chess players pulled out a big surprise after capturing six gold medals to boost the Philippines’ quest in the ongoing 5th Southeast Asian Para Games at the National Sports Complex in Bukit Jalil here.

Sander Severino retained his title for the third time since 2005 Manila meet in the men’s physically-handicapped event where teammate Henry Roger Lopez finished second to also win the team event’s gold in the 11-nation biennial meet for athletes with disabilities.

Abraham Peligro and Melchor Ireneo Pizzario Jr. have been awarded the gold medal along with Malaysian Cho Min Wang for finishing tied in the men’s visually impaired class where the Filipinos also won the team event as well as the totally-blind class team event.

“It’s a big surprise because I was just expecting two gold medals and I want to thank our supporters,” headcoach grandmaster Joey Antonio said, referring to Quezon City Mayor Sonny Belmonte, Councilor Ariel Inton and Meralco Chess Club.

With the chess team’s performance, the Team Philippines bankrolled by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) has increased its gold medal haul to sixteen, one gold short of equaling the 17 medals it won two years ago in Thailand.

The athletics improved its gold medal run to seven after Joel Balatucan retained the gold after breaking his own meet record in the men’s shot put event for polio victims, setting a new mark of 8.43 meters.

The 28-year-old Balatucan, who joined athletics’ gold winners Jerold Pete Mangliwan (men’s wheelchair 100m and 400m), Juanito Mingarine (men’s shot put T54), Prudencia Panaligan (women’s 100m T53) and Marites Burce (women’s discuss throw and shot put).

2ND NATIONAL AGE GROUP CHAMPIONSHIP

THE second National Age-Group chess championship will be held as scheduled on Aug. 28-31 at the Victory Centrall Mall in Caloocan City.

A project of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP), headed by president/chairman Prospero Pichay Jr. , in cooperation with the Victory Central Mall, the four-day competition will be held to determine the countrys representatives to the World Youth Chess Championships to be held on Nov. 11-23 in Antalya, Turkey.

NCFP executive/events director Willie Abalos said the tournament will be divided into two divisions: boys and girls.

A total of six categories will be played:

8 under – for players born on or after January 2001
10 under – born on or after January 1999
12 under – born on or after January 1997
14 under – born on or after January 1995
16 under – born on or after January 1993
18 under – born on or after January 1991
