107th ANNIVERSARY & EMPLOYEES' WEEK

In celebration of MERALCO's 107th Anniversary and Employees' Week on March 20, 2010, MERALCO Chess Club and the 107th AEW Committee is staging the BATTLE of MERALCO GMs with two groups: the Seniors Group for employees, retirees, subsidiaries and college level dependents; and the Juniors Group for grade school and high school dependents.
The tourney will be a Swiss Rapid of 10 minutes per player to finish the game and medals and cash prizes will be given to the top 3 winners of each group. Also, a cash incentive for each win will be given.

| TINALO ni Philippine National Police (PNP) top player National Master Rolando Andador ang Meralco Chess Club, 7-1, sa third simultaneous chess exhibition sa buwang ito sa Basement Canteen, Lopez Bldg, sa Meralco, Ortigas Center, Pasig City. Si Andador ay nakalikom ng 7 wins at isang talo kay Adrian Esteva ng Rizal Sector sa eight board simultaneous chess exhibition. Ang third simultaneous event sa buwang ito ng Meralco Chess Club kaalinsabay sa pagdiriwang ng 107th Meralco Anniversary & Employees’ Week at preparasyon na rin sa MVP (Manny V. Pangilinan) Olympics, kung saan ang chess ay isa sa magiging event. |

| NAGPAKITANG gilas ang dating World Chess Olympiad member National Master Mirabeau Maga matapos talunin ang Meralco Chess Club woodpushers, 7.5-1.5, sa rare nine-board simultaneous chess exhibition na ginanap sa Lopez Building sa Meralco head office sa Pasig City. Nagtala si NM Maga ng 7 wins, 1 draw kay junior player at Palarong NCR bronze medalist Rhal Sol Cruz Jr., at 1 loss kay 2009 MACE Co-Champion Jay Dicen ng Security, na lusot din kina NM Almario Bernardino sa 1st simul event last week at naka -draw kay Asia’s First GM Eugene Torre sa PARA-Fund-Raising Simul last September. Ito ang second Simultaneous Match chess activities para sa Meralco employees’ day celebration sa March 20. Ang nasabing simul ay parte rin ng preparation para sa 1st MVP (Manny V. Pangilinan) Olympics kung saan ang chess ay isa sa events. |

Chess: NM Bernardino edges Meralco players

MANILA, March 7 — Philippine and US chess Master Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr. edged Meralco Chess Club players, 3.5-2.5, in a rare six board simultaneous chess exhibition over the weekend at the Lopez Building in Meralco head office in Pasig City.
The former Virginia, USA Open champion Bernardino defeated Rhal Sol Cruz (LSGH student), Jonathan Rivera (Security) and Adonis Johnson Maclang (Valenzuela Meter- Leadman).
Jonas Santiago (SCADA) and Jay Dicen (Security) tapped two wins for Meralco Chess Cub while Adrian Esteva (Rizal Sector-Lineman) salvaged a draw in a six board simul play that launched the chess activities for Meralco Employees Day celebration on March 20.
According to Meralco Chess Club president Rolly Sol Cruz, the triumvirate (Santiago, Dicen and Esteva) are all champions, having won a tournament one time or another. The simul is also a part of preparation for the 1st MVP (Manny V. Pangilinan) Olympics where chess is one of the events.
Last month, Bernardino also swept his 10 board simultaneous chess exhibition.
He is a part-time radio commentator, sports writer and member of the coaching staff of La Salle Greenhills under the leadership of head coach International arbiter and national master Erwin Carag. (PNA) vcs/LOR

1st E-DAY SIMUL: NM BERNARDINO
As an opening move for the 107th MERALCO Employees' Day celebration, the MERALCO Chess Club staged a simul match by National Master Marlon Bernardino and the following wood pushers:

The final tally is 2 Wins - 1 Draw - 3 Losses for the MERALCO Chess Club. This event is also part of the preparation of MERALCO Chess Club for the coming MVP Olympics at the end of the month where chess is one of the event.
Other events scheduled are 2 more simuls (March 10 by NM Maga and March 12 by NM Agagon), workshop for dependents on March 13 by NM Carag, and the Battle of MERALCO GMs on March 16 and 18 which will also serve as the try-out for the MVP Olympics, and the MERALCO Day Championship and Multi-Simuls with NMs Cabellon, Agagon, Vasquez, and Bernardino on March 20.
