MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines dropped a close 1.5-2.5 decision to Spain in the second round of the 39th World Chess Olympiad at the Complex “Arena Ugra” in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia on Wednesday.
The Philippines was the 37th seed while Spain was the 16th seed.
Grandmaster (GM) Wesley So, the country’s highest-rated player with an ELO of 2668, settled a truce with fellow GM Alexei Shirov (ELO 2749) after 39 moves of Petroff defense using the disadvantageous black pieces.
So, who was manning the top board for the country in his third appearance in the Olympiad since 2006, is aiming to break the 2700 ELO barrier.
GM Darwin Laylo (ELO 2522) also drew with GM Jordi Magem Badals after 50 moves of Sicilian defense on board three.
International Master (IM) Richard Bitoon (ELO 2447), who is seeking his third and final GM norm, also halved the point with GM Daniel Alsina Leal (ELO 2523) after 42 moves of another Sicilian skirmish on board four.
But the loss of GM John Paul Gomez (ELO 2527) against GM Ivan Salgado Lopez after 22 moves of Slav defense on board two allowed the Spanish squad to escape a narrow 2.5-1.5 victory.
In the 2008 Dresden Olympiad, the RP men’s team also bowed to Spain, 1-3, despite So settling a drew with Shirov.
