LSGH bet Sol Cruz wins Meralco Chess title

MANILA, Philippines – La Salle Greenhills (LSGH) bet Raul “Rhal” Sol Cruz, Jr. captured the juniors title in the 107th anniversary of Meralco dubbed as the Battle of Meralco Grandmasters Chess Championships.
Sol Cruz, a Grade 6 pupil mentored by International Arbiter-National Master (NM) Erwin Carag, swept his all matches in the five-round Swiss-system on Saturday at the Meralco head office in Ortigas in Pasig City.
He bested Ronald Dimaguila, Amiel Christian Emata, Jose Lorenzo Maza, JC Andan and Elmer del Rosario in the event supervised by NM Eduardo Agagon.
High school bets Marc Alexis Marcalinas of Binangonan, Rizal and Miguel Thaddeus Vergara of Bocaue, Bulacan were the second and third placers, respectively, with 4 points each.
Sol Cruz, who teamed up with fellow LSGH ace Giovanni “Gio” Mejia, took the team bronze medal in this year's National Capital Region (NCR) Palarong Pambansa, representing Mandaluyong City.
