The annual Palarong NCR of DepEd has a pair of MERALCO Jrs in the field. RP 12 Under Champion Paulo Bersamina, representing Pasay City, won the gold (in teeming up with Jerad Docena) and Rhal Sol Cruz, Jr, representing Mandaluyong City, won the bronze (in teeming up with Gio Mejia).

2nd Noel Olvida Memorial Cup

Bernardino sweeps Meralco chess

MANILA, Philippines – RP and US chess master Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr. swept all of his matches in a rare simultaneous chess exhibition held recently at the Basement Canteen, Lopez Bldg, in Meralco, Ortigas Center, Pasig City.

Bernardino, a sports writer and member of the La Salle Greenhills (LSGH) coaching staff, swept his all ten board matches in the event organized by Meralco chess club.

The club is headed by president Rolly Sol Cruz supported by Mon Pataleon, James Macagbam Willy Baetiong, Bong Cachola. The tournament was held to commemorate the 2nd death anniversary of Noel P. Olvida.

Meanwhile, Maga tallied 14 wins and a draw to Jerome Saltorio of Earist.

Saltorio, the only one to score a draw against Maga won a slot in the 3rd Meralco Chess Workshop by GM Buenaventura "Bong" Villamayor.

Meralco Chess Club has already organized simultaneous chess in the past. Among the early participants were Grandmasters Wesley So, Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr., Eugene Torre, Jayson Gonzales, Mark Paragua, Villamayor, national masters Andrew Vasquez, Gerry Cabellon and US master John Daniel Bryant.

Si Bernardino, radio commentator, sports writer at miyembro ng coaching staff ng La Salle Greenhills (LSGH) sa ilalim na kandili ni head coach IA/ NM Erwin Carag, ay tinalo ang kanyang ten board matches sa one-day event na inorganisa ng Meralco chess club sa pangunguna ni president Rolly Sol Cruz sa pakikipagtulungan nina Mon Pataleon, James Macagbam Willy Baetiong at Bong Cachola bilang pag-gunita sa 2nd death anniversary ni Noel P. Olvida.

Si Maga, former Olympian member ay nagsagawa naman ng 15 boards simul chess na nagkamada ng 14 wins at isang draw kay Jerome Saltorio ng Earist.

Ang Pandacan, Manila resident Saltorio, ang bukod tanging nakatabla kay Maga ay nakatanggap ng P100 plus slot sa 3rd MERALCO Chess Workshop ni GM Buenaventura “Bong” Villamayor.

Ang Meralco Chess Club ay nakapag-organisa na ng chess simuls sa nakalipas kung saan ay nasilayan sina grandmasters Wesley So, Rogelio “Joey” Antonio Jr., Eugene Torre, Jayson Gonzales, Mark Paragua, Villamayor, national masters Andrew Vasquez, Gerry Cabellon at US master John Daniel Bryant.

2nd Noel Olvida Memorial Cup

To commemorate the 2nd death anniversary of my dearest friend Noel P. Olvida, the MERALCO Chess Club is staging a simul event on February 6, 9:00 am, Lopez Bldg in Pasig City. Our club has invited grade school and high school players from public schools such as Ramon Magsaysay HS, Rosario Elementary School, Taytay National HS, Aguinaldo HS, Pinaglabanan Elementary School, QC Science HS and EARIST. Please bring school ID and chess set. The event aims to give them a chance to hone their skills and an opportunity to play with a master. The invited masters are National Master Marlon Bernardino and Mirabeu Maga. Sponsors of the event are the friends of Noel led by Mon Pantaleon, James Macagba, Bong Cachola, Che Cusi and Las Pinas Business Center.

SEARCHING for WESLEY SO

MERALCO will be celebrating its 107th foundation day on March 20, 2010, a Saturday. And the theme of the celebration is ELEVATION, thus, in order to promote chess to a higher level for the entire MERALCO family, the MERALCO Chess Club has unanimously chosen, just in this morning's meeting, Super-GM Wesley So to do simul play with MERALCO's senior and junior players.

Mr. William, we hope Wesley is available on this date.
