Garcia, Nanola show way in Shell NCR chess elims
(The Philippine Star) Updated June 22, 2009 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - Ateneo’s Jan Garcia racked up five wins in row in impressive fashions while Christian Nanola of Laguna upset eighth seed Dave Dulay in the fifth round to gain a share of the lead in their respective divisions in the Shell National Youth Active Chess Championships-NCR leg at SM Mall of Asia over the weekend.

The third seeded Garcia, a veteran internationalist, downed Riza Bonifacio, Irene Samonte, Jessica Visca, Lemuel Bermas and Ferdinand Reyes Jr. to force a three-way tie for first with No. 6 Richelieu Salcedo of PMI and FEU’s Lennon Salgados heading into the last two rounds of the Swiss system tournament.

Salcedo beat Jerome Flores, Marie Galang, Narquingcel Reyes, James Dacanay and Adam Rico while Salgados won over Jeffrey Macabitas, Ronald Barcelon, Ephraim Maliam, Gerald Ferriol and Jayson Mercado to stay in the hunt for top honors in the 20-and-under division of the two-category event sponsored by Pilipinas Shell under its Shell Active Chess program, which supports the empowerment of the youth as part of the company’s overall Sustainable Development commitment.

Top seed Kevin Mirano, also of FEU, was held to a draw in third round by Narquingden Reyes and stood in joint fourth with Antonio Chavez, Jr., Charlene Suede and Reyes while 20 others posted four points and remained in the race for the top three places and berths in the national finals.

Filipino International Master (IM) Rogelio "Banjo" Barcenilla Jr. defeated Georgian Grandmaster Zviad Izoria to earn his third and final GM norm in the recently concluded Copper State International Chess Championship last May 29 to June 3 in Mesa, Arizona.

Barcenilla prevailed after 31 moves of a King's Indian Defense using the white pieces.
Barcenilla finished with 7 points after ten games of play in the tournament won by Uzbek GM Timur Gareev who garnered a total of 8 points.

Close friend GM Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. was elated with Barcenilla’s feat as he welcomes his colleague among the Philippine’s GMs.
"I am very very happy... he deserve the accolade and beating Zviad Izoria (HB Global Champion) is not easy. Welcome to the club," said Antonio, the lone Filipino who make it to this year's FIDE World Chess Championships (World Chess Cup) in Khanty Mansiyk, Russia.

Barcenilla joined the elite circle of RP chess players, including Eugene Torre, Joey Antonio, Bong Villamayor, Nelson Mariano II, Mark Paragua, Wesley So, Darwin Laylo, Jayson Gonzales, John Paul Gomez, Joseph Sanchez and the late Rosendo Balinas Jr.

Prospero "Butch" Pichay Jr., the president of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines also congratulated Barcenilla.
“I’m proud and happy to announce that we have a new grandmaster in Banjo (Rogelio) Barcenilla,” said Pichay, a former congressman in Surigao del Sur. Marlon Bernardino

This is the STOLTZ VARIATION [ECO D45]. It is second in popularity [with 2,485 games] to the MERAN VARIATION, 6 Bd3 [with 2,963 games]. My encounters with this variation were against NM Nico Alisangco in the Aguilar Cup in February 2009 and NM Roland Perez in the 3rd Sol Cruz Memorial Cup in May 2009.

In the historic Ribli vs Torre Candidates Match 1983 in Alicante, the Hungarian continued with 6 Bd3 and won the game and the match as well. But our legendary Pinoy GM has 1 W and 1 D against the Meran of two World Champions; Petrosian vs Torre in Moscow 1981 (1/2-1/2) and Smyslov vs Torre in Bugojno 1984 (0-1).

6... Bd6
This is the vox populi, played in 2,204 out of 2,485 games.

7 Be2
The four most popular lines are 7 Bd3 with 585 games, 7 Be2 with 540, 7 b3 with 432, and 7 g4 with 406.

If I am to rely on the Semi-Slav, I mus
t also be prepared for 7 g4, named the Shabalov Attack; Kasparov vs Nielsen in Reykjavic 2004, Morozevich vs Kramnik in Tal Memorial 2008, Kasimdzhanov vs Akopian in Elista Grand Prix 2008, Carlsen vs Anand in Linares 2009

7... O-O 8 O-O b6

Preparing for a Q-side fianchetto as played by World Champions; Shneider vs Kramnik in Alekhine Memorial 1992 and Ftacknik vs Khalifman in Padubice 1994, and Ivanchuk vs Anand in World Blitz 2007.

The main line is the pawn capture 8... dxc4; Karpov vs Anand in Brussels 1991, Kamsky vs Anand in Tilburg 1991, Vyzmanavin vs Kramnik in Moscow 1992, Van Wely vs Kramnik in Monaco 1998, Ljubojevic vs Topalov in Monte Carlo 2000, Ljubojevic vs Kramnik in Monaco 2001, and Carlsen vs Anand in Monaco 2007.

The mysterious R move, 8... Re8, is also popular among World Champions; Hjartarson vs Tal in Reykjavic 1988, Huebner vs Kasparov in Koln Match 1992, Giorgadze vs Kramnik in Manila Olympiad 1992, Grivas vs Kramnik in Dortmund 1992, Tukmakov vs Topalov in Mesa 1992, Ioseliani vs Smyslov in Womens-Veterans 1994, Zvjaginsev vs Kramnik in Moscow Olympiad 1994, Karpov vs Kamsky in World Championship 1996, Huebner vs Kramnik in Frankfurt 1996 .

The liquidation of the center pawns to maximize the power of the fianchetto has also been tried by a pair of World Champions; Gurevich vs Khalifman in Biel IZT 1983 and Karpov vs Kasparov in Linares 1991.

Up to this position is the Shneider vs Kramnik and Ftacknik vs Khalifman games.

Shneider continued wi
th 12 Bd3 while Ftacknik opted for 12 Rd1.

12... Nf6 =

D14
This is said to be the last "book move" and has been played in Onischuk vs Zvjaginsev in Hoogovens 1995 and Shneider vs Zvjaginsev in Yugoslavian championship 1995.

I do not actually know these games, as Clint Eastwood said in The Outlaw Josey Wales, "I was lucky in the order."

RYBKA rates my move as very slightly favoring W (+0.36). Better is 21... Rc8 = 22 Ne5 Kf8 23 f4 Ke7 24 Bd3 Rc7 25 Kf2 h6 26 g3 g5 27 Ke3 Nh5 28 h4 f6.

Guided by Bobby Ang's Chess Piece column in Business World titled CHINESE HORDE; "I am going to play 40 strong moves and if you also play 40 strong moves, then we have a draw.", and I did, the 3rd against a National Master!!!

FILIPINO International Master (IM) Rogelio “Banjo” Barcenilla Jr. beat Georgian GM Zviad Izoria in the final round to earn his third and final GM norm in the Copper State International Chess Championship held May 29 to June 3 in Mesa, Arizona, USA.

The former San Sebastian College standout prevailed after 31 moves of a King's Indian Defense using white according to a report from the United States Chess Federation website. The Mandaluyong City native-Barcenilla, finished with 7.0 points after 10 rounds of play.

Uzbek GM Timur Gareev topped the event with 8.0 points after dashing the GM hopes of IM Daniel Fernandez in the final round.

Sharing the limelight is 19 year-old IM Alex Lenderman who downed IM Levon Altounian to earn his first norm after 41 moves of a Caro-Kann Defense. Lenderman has 7.5 points.

Meanwhile, Barcenilla's best friend, GM Rogelio “Joey” Antonio Jr., welcomed the latter to the elite group of the country’s finest chess players. Antonio, is the lone Filipino who qualified to this year's FIDE World Chess Championships in Khanty Mansiyk, Russia.

Barcenilla will thus join GMs Eugene Torre, Antonio, Bong Villamayor, Nelson Mariano II, Mark Paragua, Wesley So, Darwin Laylo, Jayson Gonzales, John Paul Gomez, Joseph Sanchez and the late Rosendo Balinas Jr.

Prospero “Butch” Pichay Jr., the president of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines said, “I’m proud and happy to announce that we have a new grandmaster in Banjo Barcenilla,” said Pichay.

Aside from being a chess GM, Barcenilla is also a blackbelter in taekwondo.

KASPAROV CHESS FOUNDATION

Chess is one of the oldest and most challenging games. Remarkably, the game has also proven to be an invaluable educational aide and one of the latest pedagogical tools for young students. Through the game of chess, children learn analytical and disciplined thinking skills, which are applicable to many other intellectual pursuits.

More than any other game, chess has the potential to transform a child. If taught correctly, chess can be a student's driving force, helping him/her in every aspect of critical thinking development.

Chess is also extremely beneficial in raising self-esteem, teaching determination, self-motivation and sportsmanship. It's one of the few positive in-school and extra-curricular activities for students of all ages and from all backgrounds. Chess is the one great equalizer in education, in which anyone with determination to succeed can excel.

But don't just take our word for it. Check out what the experts have been saying about chess as a key component in a child's education:
